N7771 holds a special place in aviation history as the first Boeing 777 ever built. Here's a brief overview of its journey:

Early Life as a Prototype:

  • Born in Everett: N7771 rolled out of Boeing's Everett factory on April 9, 1994, with the construction number WA001.
  • First Flight: On June 12, 1994, it took to the skies for the first time, piloted by Boeing test pilots John E. Cashman and Kenny Higgins. This marked the beginning of an extensive 11-month flight test program.
  • Rigorous Testing: N7771 was crucial in obtaining aviation authorities' certification for the 777. It endured countless hours of testing, pushing the limits of its design and capabilities.
  • Key Role in Development: The data gathered from N7771's test flights helped refine the 777's systems and ensure its safety and efficiency.

From Testbed to Airline Service:

  • Acquired by Cathay Pacific: After serving as a test aircraft, N7771 was sold to Cathay Pacific and re-registered as B-HNL. It was refurbished and configured for passenger service.
  • Years of Commercial Operation: B-HNL flew for Cathay Pacific for several years, carrying passengers across the airline's network.

Retirement and Preservation:

  • A Place in History: Eventually, B-HNL retired from commercial service, and it decided to preserve the aircraft.
  • Museum Display: Today, this pioneering aircraft is on display at the Pima Air & Space Museum in Tucson, Arizona. Aviation enthusiasts can admire its innovative design and learn about its contribution to aviation history.

N7771's journey from a prototype to a museum piece is a testament to its importance in developing the Boeing 777, one of history's most successful wide-body airliners.
