An era in U.S. aviation came to an end at 3:25 p.m. on October 30, 1983, when TWA Flight 4, the last Boeing 707 to operate for a scheduled airline in the continental United States, landed at New York City’s Kennedy International Airport. During its 2-hour and 40-minute flight from Miami, the jet’s 79 passengers celebrated by sipping champagne. Before disembarking, the travelers removed many detachable items from the aircraft, including seat number plaques and safety instruction cards. Flight attendants used their lipsticks to write “Goodbye, we love you” on the walls and seats. Pilot Shaun Shattuck, age 44, remarked, “I will miss the 707 terribly. I grew up with it. It’s been a reliable and trouble-free friend.”
