Qantas and the Boeing 747 have a long history together. The 747, also nicknamed the "Queen of the Skies", was a mainstay in Qantas' fleet for nearly 50 years. The airline retired its last 747-400ER in July 2020.

Qantas first introduced the 747-400 in 1989 and it quickly became the workhorse of their long-haul fleet. The aircraft was known for its range and capacity, allowing Qantas to operate flights from Australia to Europe and North America nonstop. Qantas even ran a competition among staff to name the new 747 model, and the winner was "Longreach."

The Boeing 747 was a truly iconic aircraft, and its retirement marked the end of an era for Qantas. However, the airline has since replaced its 747s with more modern aircraft, such as the Airbus A380.
