Air New Zealand operated a fleet of five Lockheed L-188 Electra turboprop airliners between 1959 and 1972. The Electra was a popular aircraft in its day, known for its speed, range, and comfort. Air New Zealand's Electras were used on domestic routes within New Zealand, as well as on trans-Tasman services to Australia.
The airline's first Electra, ZK-TEA, was delivered in November 1959 and named "Aotearoa IV" (Land of the Long White Cloud). The remaining four Electras were delivered over the next few years.
Air New Zealand's Electras were eventually replaced by jet-powered aircraft, such as the Douglas DC-8. However, they played an important role in the airline's development during the 1960s.
