Qantas operated a fleet of Douglas DC-3s in the early years of its history, particularly on its New Guinea internal services. By 1949, Qantas had five DC-3 freighter/passenger aircraft serving New Guinea . These aircraft eventually became part of a mixed fleet that also included Dragons, Drovers, Beavers, and Otters.

The DC-3 also played a role in opening up new routes for Qantas. For example, on September 7, 1953, the DC-3 began operating services on other routes in New Guinea.

However, when Qantas withdrew from its New Guinea operations in 1960, the remaining services and aircraft were transferred to Trans Australia Airlines (TAA). After that, Qantas only operated a very small number of DC-3s, primarily for pilot training and occasional engine transport.
