The Corgi Douglas C-47 Skytrain RAF No.271 Sqn KG374 David Lord Arnhem Holland September 19th 1944 Scale 1/72 AA38203 is a diecast model airplane that commemorates a famous World War II mission.
The model depicts a Douglas C-47 Skytrain, also known as the Dakota, that was flown by Flight Lieutenant David Lord of the Royal Air Force's No. 271 Squadron. On September 19th, 1944, Lord flew his C-47, serial number KG374, on a resupply mission to British paratroopers fighting in Arnhem, Holland, during Operation Market Garden. Lord's mission was particularly dangerous because he had to fly at a low altitude to ensure accurate drops of supplies. Despite being hit by anti-aircraft fire and having one engine on fire, Lord completed his mission and dropped his supplies before his crew bailed out. Tragically, Lord's aircraft crashed and he was killed. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery and determination.
The Corgi model is a 1/72 scale replica of Lord's C-47. It features markings of No. 271 Squadron and depicts the aircraft as it appeared during the Arnhem mission. The model is a tribute to Lord's heroism and a reminder of the important role that transport aircraft played in World War II.
