Lord's mission was particularly dangerous because he had to fly at a low altitude to ensure accurate drops of supplies. Despite being hit by anti-aircraft fire and having one engine on fire, Lord completed his mission and dropped his supplies before his crew bailed out. Tragically, Lord's aircraft crashed and he was killed. He was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery and determination.
